Thefts from Mailboxes

Since June of 2018, Abington Police and other jurisdictions have taken reports of ‘check fraud’.  It has been determined that the checks have been placed in standalone USPS mailboxes located at post offices as well as other locations throughout the Township.  Thieves are using glue or another sticky substance at the end of a stick or pole to remove the envelopes containing the checks.  Once opened, the suspects alter the check and fraudulently increase the amount and cash the check.  The Abington Police Department is recommending that residents place all mail containing checks or other sensitive materials in the mail slot inside the post office.  The USPS is working to secure the mailboxes to prevent such thefts.
