Police hiring is controlled by Civil Service rules which require a written test and oral interview. In addition, candidates must pass a physical agility test and undergo a thorough background investigation. Abington Police Department’s 92-officer force is one of the largest, most progressive suburban police agencies in the Commonwealth. Abington Police Department is both a State and Internationally Accredited agency. Officers in Abington enjoy a wide variety of career opportunities in the Patrol, Detective, Community Policing and Administrative Divisions. The Department also has a SWAT Team, K-9, Drug Enforcement Unit, D.A.R.E., Bike Patrol Unit, Juvenile Task Force, and Crisis Negotiation Unit. Sworn personnel can also specialize as School Resource Officers, Juvenile Officers, Field Training Officers, Accident Investigators, and Crime Prevention Specialists.
