Gun Arrest

On August 25, at approximately 8:26 pm, Abington Township Police arrested a juvenile male for possession of a firearm during the Abington/Cheltenham football game located at the Abington High School stadium.  An alert parent notified police after observing the male with the weapon inside the stadium.   Upon contacting the male, police located a loaded handgun with an extended magazine protruding from the male’s waist area.  A second, loaded magazine was also found on his person.  The juvenile was quickly taken into custody and escorted out of the area without further incident.  No injuries were sustained during this incident.

It was mutually agreed that the football game would be suspended at halftime out of an abundance of caution and for the safety of the students and spectators.  A heavy police presence remained in the area of the High School Stadium ensuring all spectators left the area safely. Further investigation revealed the suspect to be a Cheltenham High School Student. Due to the seriousness of this offense the juvenile was detained by Montgomery County Juvenile Probation and charged with felony weapons offenses.  The juvenile was transported to the Montgomery County Juvenile Center. The Abington Township Police Department and Abington School District will continue to work closely on this investigation.

CRIMINAL CHARGES, AND ANY DISCUSSION THEREOF, ARE MERELY ALLEGATIONS AND ALL DEFENDANTS ARE PRESUMED INNOCENT UNTIL AND UNLESS PROVEN GUILTY.
