JOB DESCRIPTION - PART-TIME DISPATCHER

Job Objective (Purpose of the position):

Answers telephone calls to Police Department; dispatches emergency and police personnel; sends and receives messages to outside police personnel.

Essential Job Functions (Functions essential to attaining the job objective):

Answers telephone and takes messages for Police Department staff or received and records information on computer.

Receives emergency calls including E 9-1-1 calls and dispatches emergency personnel and/or Patrol Officer to location. Responsible for coordinating and monitoring their response.

Records information and time of activity in computer system.

Accesses NCIC, CLEAN, and other databases on computers to input and retrieve information regarding vehicle, arrest, and other records.

Interacts with the public; receives monies from public and provides receipt.

Physically searches female prisoners (female dispatchers only).

Compiles and files reports and logs.

Physically monitors prisoners held in detention calls and also monitors prisoners by audio and video monitors.

Monitors radio frequencies of surrounding municipalities.

Replaces boxes of computer printout paper.

Requirements, Training and Experience:

Graduation from high school or equivalent; experience with E-9-1-1 preferred; successful completion of an on-the-job training program; completion of selected educational courses as may be defined by the department.

Shift work required (fill-in and replacement hours):

  • Fill-in Replacement hours (varying hours required):
    • From 4 hours up to 12 hours; flexible schedule available.

Job Location (Place[s] where work is performed):

Police Headquarters Communications Center and Police Cellblock area.

Telephone, PA radio; multiple computers; tape deck; county scanner, clock; VCR monitor; typewriter; copier; TDD device; paperwork.
