Beginning in late September 2007, Abington Police Department began investigating residential burglaries which were occurring in the Rydal section of Abington Township.

On Wednesday, October 17, 2007, Abington Police Department arrested Jelisa Smith, 18 years of age, of 2122 Medary Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in connection with the burglaries. Smith was arraigned by District Justice Juanita Price on one count of burglary, 2 counts of theft and related charges. She was released after posting a $75,000 bail bond.

On November 1, 2007, the previously filed charges were withdrawn and Smith was re-charged with 5 counts of burglary, a felony of the 1st degree, 5 counts of criminal trespass and other related charges. The additional charges are as a result of the continuing investigations by Abington Police Department.

On November 1, 2007, Smith surrendered to Abington Police Department, was processed on the additional charges and was arraigned by District Justice Joseph Dougherty. Bail was continued at $75,000 cash and Smith remains free pending action by Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas. Abington Police Department continues to seek any information about burglaries or suspicious persons who knocked on doors and asked for directions in the Rydal, Abington or Jenkintown areas between September 1, 2007 and October 17, 2007 when Smith was first arrested.
