CRIME
ALERT
LATE NIGHT RESIDENTIAL
BURGLARIES
A serious crime trend is occurring throughout
Southeastern Pennsylvania, wherein occupied homes have been being
burglarized during late night hours. Several homes in Abington
Township have fallen prey to these criminals. Typically the crimes
are occurring between Midnight & 4:00 AM. Entry is gained via an
unlocked door or window in the rear of the homes. In some cases,
entry was gained by using a garage door opener found in an unlocked
car parked in the driveway to gain entry to the home by using the
garage entrance. Once inside the home, the thieves remain on the
first floor and primarily steal cash and credit cards from purses
and/or wallets left lying in the dining and kitchen areas. In some
cases, small electronics have been taken as well as car keys and
then the car is stolen. The suspect(s) have not attempted to enter
the second floor of the home.
Here are some simple tips for safeguarding your home
and your family:
- ALWAYS LOCK ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS, EVEN WHILE AT
HOME!
- ALARMS - If you have an alarm, please use it, even
while at home.
- CARS - ALWAYS lock all doors and windows and place
garage door openers in the glove box or trunk when not in
use.
- DRIVEWAYS - If possible, leave a car parked in the
driveway when not at home, it gives the home an occupied look and
remember to lock all doors and windows.
- KEYS - DON'T hide keys outside, this is the first place
thieves look. Secure all keys inside the home and if possible take
them to the second floor when retiring for the night.
- PURSES/WALLETS - DO NOT LEAVE on the first floor area -
Take them with you to the second floor when retiring for the
night.
- VALUABLES - DON'T leave small electronics such as cell
phones, lap top computers, etc. unsecured on the first floor. Move
all jewelry and other valuables from the bedroom area to another
secure location in the home or use a safe deposit box. Inventory
and photograph or videotape all your valuables and jewelry -
Include description & serial numbers.
