On Sunday, July 1, 2007 at approximately 7:00 PM, a female resident
was assaulted as she entered Alvethorpe Park in the Jenkintown Section
of Abington Township. In response to this assault, Abington Police
assigned plain clothes police officers to patrol Alvethorpe Park.
At approximately 7:30 PM on Thursday, July 5, 2007 officers saw
a man walk into the park who fit the description of the person who
committed the assault. This man quickly turned around and attempted
to leave the park but was stopped by officers. He was positively
identified by witnesses who had seen the suspect flee the park on
Sunday evening following the assault. The suspect, William J. Kelly,
age 32 of the Elkins Park Section of Cheltenham Township was taken
into custody and charged with criminal attempt - kidnapping, unlawful
restraint, assault and related charges. Kelly will be arraigned
on July 6, 2007.
